Description

Lacquer analyses lossless audio files on iPhonelikely transcoded or upscaled from a lossy source. The analysis runs on device with an FFT — nothing is uploaded and there is no account. It weighs the high-frequency roll-off, whether that roll-off matches the sample rate the file claims, and whether the same edge holds across the whole track, and it reports "can't tell" rather than guessing when the evidence is inconclusive. It is also a full player for FLAC, ALAC, WAV and NAS/SMB libraries. Free.

Could you build this?

Partial While an iOS audio player UI is easy to build, performing accurate spectral roll-off analysis and true lossless/transcode detection using on-device FFT requires digital signal processing (DSP) expertise.

What it would actually take: The app requires an iOS implementation in Swift using the Accelerate framework (vDSP) to decode audio and compute Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT) across frequencies. The core technical hurdle is developing the heuristic or statistical model that reliably detects artificial high-frequency cutoffs (e.g., 16kHz MP3 compression shelves) versus natural acoustic roll-offs without producing false positives on vintage or acoustic masterings.
