Description

I'm making a platform for simple open source games you can play anywhere.Games are all just JavaScript classes and you can read the source of every game on the platform.I started working on initial "games" (mostly rendering tests) in 2018 and eventually built all of the platform stuff around it to make it easy to share games. There's also an in-browser editor available for you to make and publish games all from the browser.Would love some feedback on the games and studio features as well as the platform overall. All of the code is available at https://github.com/homegamesio

Could you build this?

Partial While an arcade-style web platform and simple JS games can be vibe-coded, an 8-year evolution of a self-hostable game framework, custom runtime sandbox, and multiplayer sessions requires non-trivial architectural rigor.

What it would actually take: A production version requires an isolated sandboxed iframe or Web Worker runtime to execute untrusted JavaScript games safely, paired with a real-time room matchmaking service (e.g., Node.js with WebSockets/WebRTC). Game state synchronization, input handling, and self-hosting packaging require experienced systems/frontend architecture rather than quick LLM prompting.

Discussion

20 comments analyzed.

Competitors mentioned: Garry Kitchen's Game Maker, Scorched Earth, Gorilla Basic (GORILLA.BAS), three.js with rigid body physics engines

Concerns raised: Demo games too trivial and don't showcase system capabilities, Complex 3D web games cause high CPU usage and unresponsiveness, Game buttons/controls not working, Featured weed-themed game creates negative community perception, Homepage has double scrollbars

Feature requests: Add documentation links outside the studio, Create more impressive showcase games to demonstrate platform potential
