Could you build this?
Partial A Rust Wayland shell with its own file manager, image viewer, and video player is a large but reachable project for a strong solo builder with AI help. The hard parts are Wayland compositor integration and media decoding, which need specialized systems knowledge.
What it would actually take: The stack would be Rust with smithay or wlroots bindings for niri/Wayland protocols, plus GStreamer or FFmpeg for video and image decoding and a GPU-friendly rendering layer. Getting the shell to behave correctly across compositor events, input, and multi-monitor setups requires Wayland protocol expertise. Signed updates and multi-distro packaging add release-engineering work.
