Description
Hi HN,I spent the last few months reading the RISC‑V specification to build the lightest possible sandboxes. The idea behind a vpod is to quickly spin up a Linux sandbox from snapshots (Alpine by default) without any setup or subsystem required. The trade-off for portability and security is raw CPU speed. So we don't expect it to match native workloads with Python or pip, for example.More info is in the README https://github.com/capsulerun/vpodHappy to answer any questions!

Could you build this?
No Writing a RISC-V CPU emulator and hardware virtualization layer from scratch to boot Alpine Linux inside WebAssembly requires deep low-level systems and computer architecture expertise.
What it would actually take: The project requires implementing a RISC-V (RV64GC) emulator in C, Rust, or Zig that adheres strictly to the RISC-V privileged architecture specification, including MMU, page tables, and CSRs. This emulator must compile to WebAssembly and provide virtualized block devices, memory snapshots, and serial terminals to boot an Alpine Linux kernel. Executing this requires specialized knowledge of CPU architectures, Linux kernel booting sequences, and low-level WebAssembly memory management.
Discussion
5 comments analyzed.
Competitors mentioned: jslinux, Emscripten
Concerns raised: No browser support yet (WASI-based, not Emscripten), Networking doesn't work, RISC-V emulation layer adds complexity vs direct WASM compilation
Feature requests: Browser demo on GitHub page, Networking support extension

Same idea, different domain
Nobody's really built a dev tools tool for Sales yet.
