Container

Run Linux containers on your Mac, each in its own VM

Read the full description

Container creates and runs Linux containers as lightweight VMs on a Mac. Written in Swift for Apple silicon, it gives each container its own VM instead of one shared VM. It pulls, builds and pushes standard OCI images, so any registry works. Open source under Apache 2.0. Requires Apple silicon and macOS 26. For developers who run Linux workloads on a Mac and want a native, Apple-made option.

Could you build this?

No It requires low-level Apple Virtualization framework work to run a separate lightweight VM per container, plus OCI image handling and networking, which needs systems programming expertise beyond what vibe coding reliably delivers.

What it would actually take: The stack is Swift on Apple's Virtualization.framework, with a custom minimal Linux kernel and init, virtio device plumbing for disk, network, and filesystem sharing, and an OCI-compliant image store and registry client. The hard parts are VM boot latency, networking between VMs and the host, and correct OCI layer handling. This takes a systems engineer experienced with virtualization, Linux internals, and Apple's hypervisor APIs.
