The official Google Drive app keeps everything on your startup disk. Gocci puts Google Drive in Finder and keeps what you download on whichever disk you choose, an external one included. Built on File Provider, the same mechanism as iCloud Drive: opening a folder downloads nothing, thumbnails don't pull files, reading part of a 70GB video fetches only that part, and Finder's own cloud badges and Remove Download just work. rclone runs underneath, no kernel extension. Free and open source.

Partial The settings UI and Drive API integration are vibe-codeable, but the core is a macOS File Provider extension with a sync engine that handles placeholders, caching and conflicts. That is a difficult piece to get right without systems experience.
What it would actually take: The stack is Swift with Apple's File Provider framework, plus the Google Drive API and an on-disk cache that can be pointed at any volume. The hard part is the sync state machine: placeholders, lazy downloads, conflict handling and offline behavior all have to be correct, which takes experienced macOS and sync-engine engineers. A solo builder can get a prototype, but reliability takes much longer.
