Description

Swarmfile is a drive for files too big to download. Mount a project — terabytes or more — and only the bytes you open stream in, so something bigger than your hard drive opens in seconds and takes almost no space. Unlike sync tools it never copies the whole file; unlike Git it happily holds the huge ones — with version control, branches, git clone/push and Git-LFS built in. Files move peer-to-peer in an office. Mac/Windows/Linux.

Could you build this?

No Building a virtual file system driver capable of streaming multi-terabyte files on-demand without full local sync requires deep systems-level OS driver and virtual filesystem engineering.

What it would actually take: Requires developing custom OS-level filesystem drivers or user-space filesystems (FUSE on Linux/macOS, Cloud Filter API/ProjFS on Windows) along with a chunk-level distributed object storage backend. The hard part is intercepting low-level OS file read calls, streaming byte ranges with low latency, and managing cache eviction without locking file handles. This demands deep systems programming expertise in C/Rust and operating system kernel/filesystem internals.
