Description

A free, MIT-licensed Rust CLI for comparing database schemas. It supports PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB and SQLite, plus SQL schema files. Inspect schema drift, export structured output and use a nonzero exit code in CI when schemas differ. dbdiff generates migration SQL with locking warnings for review; it does not execute migrations. The demo compares two synthetic SQL files.

Could you build this?

Partial A basic CLI tool is straightforward, but robust AST parsing across multiple SQL dialects and detecting complex schema drift with locking safety checks requires deep systems and compiler knowledge.

What it would actually take: The core tool requires Rust with AST parsing libraries (e.g., sqlparser-rs) for Postgres, MySQL, and SQLite. The difficult engineering challenge is accurately normalizing vendor-specific data types, constraints, and sequences, plus generating idempotent, transactional migration DDL that avoids table-locking deadlocks.
