Description

Mailwell is a native Mac mail app for people with more than one account. Gmail, iCloud, Fastmail, Kagi Mail, Microsoft 365 and any IMAP or JMAP server share one unified inbox. Mail is stored on your Mac and syncs straight to your provider: no Mailwell servers, no tracking, no ads. Inbox tabs, rules, snooze, send later, and undo for everything. AI is optional and off by default. Turn on MCP and Claude can search your mail, read only.

Could you build this?

No Building a full-featured, local-first native email client supporting IMAP, JMAP, and Exchange/M365 protocols is notoriously complex. It involves intricate local database synchronization, MIME parsing edge cases, threading, and robust offline caching in native Swift/Objective-C.

What it would actually take: The architecture would require a Swift/AppKit or SwiftUI frontend backed by native SQLite or Core Data storage, with low-level protocol engines for IMAP, JMAP, and Graph/EWS. The hardest part is handling RFC-compliant email parsing, bidirectional state sync, token management, and edge-case MIME rendering without relying on a hosted proxy backend. This requires seasoned native macOS engineers with deep email protocol specialization.
