Description

Computer use is a new public preview feature in GitHub Copilot CLI and the GitHub Copilot app for macOS and Windows, built by GitHub. It lets Copilot read on-screen content and click, type, scroll, and drag across desktop applications, including legacy GUI-only software with no API or CLI. Users approve access before Copilot controls an app, and macOS walks through the needed Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions.

Could you build this?

No Desktop OS-level computer use requires low-level OS accessibility hooks, custom vision-to-action grounding models, and complex multimodal agent scaffolding built by frontier AI research teams.

What it would actually take: The implementation demands native OS accessibility APIs (UI Automation on Windows, AXUIElement on macOS), low-level virtual input injection (kernel/driver or OS input simulation), and low-latency screen capture pipelines. On top of that, it requires fine-tuned multimodal vision-language models trained explicitly on GUI grounding (bounding boxes, click targets, scrolling trajectories) and robust action-correction loops. This requires advanced ML research teams combined with native systems engineers.
