Description

Loki Eye is a super light network video recorder that turns a PC, Mac or Linux machine you already own into a private camera system. It saves H.264 and H.265 streams to disk exactly as your cameras send them and uses your cameras' own ONVIF motion events. Your footage never leaves your network.

Could you build this?

Partial A basic desktop wrapper is easy, but managing concurrent RTSP/ONVIF video streams, demuxing H.264/H.265, and direct disk streaming without transcoding requires specialized multimedia systems work.

What it would actually take: A production version would be built in Go, Rust, or C++ interfacing with FFmpeg or GStreamer libraries, packaged as a cross-platform desktop binary (e.g., using Tauri or Electron). The complex parts are robust ONVIF WS-Discovery/event parsing across buggy IP camera firmwares and high-throughput, low-CPU disk writing of fragmented MP4/mkv streams without dropped frames. Systems-level media streaming and hardware interaction expertise is needed.
