Description

RetouchPi is a full photo studio in your browser: 52 tools, layers and masks, PSD round-trip, portrait retouching and ID photos. No download, no account, no upload - photos are decoded, edited and exported on your own device, so nothing leaves your machine. Exports carry no watermark, and the editor is free. Under the hood: a Rust/WASM core with a real layer stack (groups, masks, clipping masks, adjustment layers, 10 layer styles) and a history panel that keeps your selection on undo.

Could you build this?

No Building a full-fledged browser-based Photoshop competitor with 52 tools, masking, and lossless PSD round-tripping requires massive, specialized graphics engineering.

What it would actually take: A high-performance WebGL/WebGPU and WebAssembly (C++/Rust) rendering engine executing in the browser. The hardest aspects are reverse-engineering Adobe's proprietary, poorly documented PSD binary specification and implementing non-destructive layer masks, blend modes, and sub-pixel brush physics at 60fps. Requires deep domain expertise in digital signal processing, color spaces, and low-level graphics optimization.
