Description

Ballast is a control plane and agent for Hyper-V hosts and failover clusters. The agent runs on each host and keeps enforcing its last-known-good config if the centre goes offline, catching back up automatically once reachable again. Community edition is free forever for one cluster of any size plus unlimited standalone hosts. The agent is open source (Apache 2.0); the centre is closed source. Built primarily with Claude Code under my direction, tested against real Hyper-V hosts and clusters.

Could you build this?

No Building a resilient, offline-capable declarative control plane and agent for Hyper-V failover clusters requires deep Windows systems programming, virtualization internals, and distributed systems consensus engineering.

What it would actually take: A production version requires low-level C# or Rust agents interfacing with Windows Hyper-V WMI/VMBus APIs and Failover Clustering APIs (MSCluster). The architecture needs a local state store (e.g., SQLite/etcd-like raft consensus) on each host to manage idempotent reconciliation loops, plus a central orchestration gateway handling mutual TLS and CRD-style declarative manifests. Doing this reliably across network partitions without risking split-brain or data corruption requires senior virtualization and distributed systems infrastructure engineers.
