Description
Coii Ref is a local-first reference manager for Mac. It indexes the image and video folders already on your disk — no import, no upload, no account — and gives you one search line across all of them, with filters and smart views that update themselves as tags and names change. Arrange anything on infinite canvases saved as plain JSON you can version or share. Files never move, and the index stays in sync with Finder. $19 once, 3 machines, all updates, 30-day trial.

Could you build this?
Partial Building an infinite canvas with zoom, thumbnail generation, and metadata indexing across tens of thousands of local high-resolution media files without freezing macOS requires deep local hardware performance optimization.
What it would actually take: A performant tool like this requires Swift/Metal or Rust/Skia, employing SQLite (with FTS5) for fast query parsing across file metadata, alongside background Grand Central Dispatch/GCD pipelines for asynchronous EXIF extraction, color analysis, and proxy generation. The canvas itself requires a virtualized viewport system (caching mipmaps and decoding thumbnails on demand) to prevent massive memory overhead when navigating tens of thousands of media files.
