Description

Awnsy is a small menu bar translator for macOS. Select text in any app, press ⌘C twice, and the translation appears right over the window. For text you can't select, like images, scanned PDFs or video, drag a box around it and Awnsy reads and translates it. The translation model lives inside the app and runs on your Mac. No account, no API key, works offline, and what you translate stays on your machine. If you prefer cloud quality, add your own OpenAI or Anthropic key.

Could you build this?

Partial While wrapping an open-source model is straightforward, building a native macOS menu bar app with global shortcut interception, local OCR, and bundled offline on-device neural translation requires non-trivial Swift/macOS systems expertise.

What it would actually take: A native Swift/macOS application utilizing CGEvent taps or Accessibility APIs to intercept global keybindings (double Cmd+C) and screen capture for VisionKit OCR. It requires embedding lightweight on-device translation models (like MarianMT or quantized Mistral) running efficiently via Apple Neural Engine / CoreML without excessive memory and battery drain. The hardest part is packaging low-latency offline inference alongside macOS accessibility permissions and system-level overlay rendering.
