Description

Matchaboy turns handheld gaming into hands-on discovery. Play Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games, then pause and explore CPU instructions, memory, graphics and sound through a built-in Inspector. Free and open source, with two included indie games and direct host/join netplay. Built with Astra in Codex: an original Game Boy engine, mGBA-powered GBA support, and ten original game experiments available in the source.

Could you build this?

No Writing cycle-accurate Game Boy / Game Boy Advance emulators with low-level CPU/memory inspection and synchronized netplay requires deep low-level systems programming and hardware architecture knowledge.

What it would actually take: The tech stack involves C/C++ or Rust with SDL/WebAssembly, implementing cycle-accurate Z80/ARM7TDMI CPU emulation, memory-mapped I/O, PPU graphics pipelines, and APU sound generation, alongside rollback or lockstep netplay protocols. AI coding assistants struggle severely with the timing-critical edge cases and cycle accuracy required for commercial ROM compatibility.
