Description

ETIC converts formatted Excel tables into editable InDesign tables through IDML while preserving the formatting already defined in the Excel source. It is designed for workflows where Excel is the source document and its formatting matters. ETIC works as a standalone Windows application, so the conversion itself does not require InDesign. Open the generated IDML in InDesign and continue editing normally.

Could you build this?

Partial A desktop GUI for file selection is simple, but compiling complex Excel formatting into Adobe's strict, proprietary InDesign Markup Language (IDML) schema without file corruption is technically difficult.

What it would actually take: The architecture requires parsing XLSX OpenXML styles, cell spans, and typography using libraries like openpyxl or ClosedXML, then mapping them into InDesign's complex IDML XML package format (Stories, Resources, and Graphic layers). The hard part is reverse-engineering Adobe InDesign's exacting XML specification to ensure tables import cleanly and remain fully editable across diverse InDesign versions without throwing validation errors.
