Description

PaperPhone is an AGPL-3.0 messaging family from an independent Chinese developer. Plus combines encrypted messaging, native desktop/mobile clients, social features and 100-person meetings. Lite takes a smaller Tor-only approach with no clearnet fallback, hybrid X25519 + ML-KEM-768 key agreement, an optional local privacy password, and eight on-device text-appearance modes. Both editions are designed for straightforward self-hosting.

Could you build this?

No Building secure, custom peer-to-peer messengers implementing advanced cryptography (post-quantum ML-KEM-768, X25519) and Tor hidden service routing requires specialized cryptographic and distributed systems engineering.

What it would actually take: Building PaperPhone requires deep cryptographic engineering to implement hybrid post-quantum key agreement schemes (X25519 + ML-KEM-768), double ratchets, and zero-knowledge identity proofs. The network layer requires embedding Tor (via Arti or C-Tor bindings) for peer-to-peer rendezvous without clearnet leakage, alongside custom WebRTC/SFU topologies for low-latency 100-person group calls over encrypted tunnels. Rigorous memory safety (Rust/Go), formal protocol verification, and independent cryptographic audits are mandatory to make such privacy claims credible.
