Description

Vunio is a native macOS and iPhone video player for the files other players tend to give up on. It opens MKV and other tricky formats, browses SMB, NFS, SFTP, FTP and WebDAV shares without mounting them, and matches subtitles to the video itself. The public beta is especially focused on subtitle rendering, Simplified Chinese and ASS/SSA support, and remembering downloaded subtitles when you reopen a film.

Could you build this?

No Building a performant native media player supporting dozens of container codecs, HDR/Dolby Vision passthrough, and custom network protocol clients (SMB/NFS/SFTP) without OS-level mounting requires deep systems and low-level video engineering.

What it would actually take: The app embeds libVLC or FFmpeg and libass in a Swift/C++ bridge, combined with pure-userspace network filesystem clients for SMB2/3, NFS, and SFTP. It requires native video rendering pipelines (Metal, VideoToolbox), custom bitstream demuxers, audio passthrough engines for TrueHD/DTS, and binary hashing algorithms for subtitle APIs, demanding extensive expertise in C/C++, AV pipelines, and network file protocols.
