Description

DayZ has no map and no minimap. Every other DayZ map needs you to know where you are already. ZLocator finds it: point your phone at the screen and it recognises the terrain in front of you, names the town you're next to, and shows which way you're facing. Nothing is installed on the PC or console — it only looks at the screen, so it works on Switch, PlayStation and Xbox too. Chernarus, Livonia and Sakhal. The map is free; finding yourself is the paid part.

Could you build this?

No Real-time visual geolocation from a shaky phone camera pointed at arbitrary game terrain without markers requires proprietary 3D terrain rendering, synthetic training datasets, and sophisticated visual place recognition (VPR) algorithms.

What it would actually take: Building this requires extracting the complete 3D heightmaps, satellite textures, and asset placements from DayZ game files across massive maps (Chernarus, Sakhal, etc.), followed by offline rendering of millions of camera perspectives to create a georeferenced visual database. The client-server stack requires a visual place recognition (VPR) model (such as CosPlace or NetVLAD fine-tuned on game engine renders) coupled with fast vector indexing (FAISS) and feature matching (SuperPoint/LightGlue) to estimate 6-DOF camera pose under varying game weather, lighting, and screen glare conditions.
