Description

Every "cloud backup" app can technically see your photos - they hold the decryption key, not you. Memories on Cloud is different: every photo and video is encrypted on your device with a key only you hold, using real AES-256 end-to-end encryption. We store ciphertext, nothing else - no key on our servers to leak, subpoena, or lose in a breach. Auto-backup runs quietly over Wi-Fi, unlock is one fingerprint tap, and you can see exactly how much storage each of your devices is using.

Could you build this?

Partial While client-side encryption can use off-the-shelf primitives, building a reliable, background-syncing cross-platform photo/video backup app with client-side deduplication, chunking, and key recovery is complex systems work.

What it would actually take: Requires native mobile apps (Swift/Kotlin) utilizing background upload daemons (WorkManager, BackgroundTasks) integrated with object storage like S3. Hard engineering challenges include handling gigabyte-sized video streaming encryption (AES-256-GCM chunked with HKDF key derivation), seamless background uploading under aggressive OS process kills, and zero-knowledge key management and recovery.
