Description

Planning a multi-day hike means juggling three tools: a spreadsheet for pack weight, a map for the route, and forums to find out where you can legally sleep. Bivtrack does all three — and finds the campsites for you. Drop in a GPX track and it analyses the terrain along your route: slope, vegetation, water, exposure. You get ranked bivouac spots. Real terrain, computed — not scraped listings. Open elevation data, no paid API in the stack, so the core stays free. Built solo.

Could you build this?

Partial While the GPX viewer and pack weight calculator are standard web features, GIS terrain analysis (slope, vegetation, legal zoning/bivouac regulations along a trail) requires specialized geospatial datasets and spatial processing pipelines.

What it would actually take: The architecture would consist of a PostGIS backend paired with Python (GDAL, rasterio, shapely) and open DEM (Digital Elevation Models like Copernicus or SRTM) combined with land-cover datasets (CORINE Land Cover or ESA WorldCover). The challenge is accurately querying local environmental restrictions, protected park boundaries, and elevation steepness buffers efficiently along high-resolution polyline tracks. Building this requires GIS engineering skills and curating fragmented national and regional legal bivouac datasets.
