Description

Every Wayland compositor I could find is a tiling one: sway, river, Hyprland, dwl, niri. If you want windows that float and overlap with titlebars and a taskbar, the way IceWM does it, there's almost nothing. That is Steppewm

Could you build this?

No Writing a custom Wayland compositor requires deep knowledge of the Wayland protocol, wlroots/Smithay, Linux DRM/KMS graphics pipelines, and C/Rust systems programming.

What it would actually take: A real Wayland compositor is implemented in C or Rust using libraries like `wlroots` or `smithay`, interacting directly with Linux kernel interfaces (DRM/KMS, libinput, EGL/GLES). The difficult part is implementing protocol negotiation, input seat arbitration, surface stacking and damage tracking, and window decor/taskbar IPC correctly from scratch. This requires specialized low-level Linux systems and graphics engineering expertise that LLMs cannot reliably synthesize.

Discussion

7 comments analyzed.

Competitors mentioned: IceWM, XFCE, Openbox, labwc

Concerns raised: Struggle to implement OSD or good non-janky taskbar, Buggy or limited taskbar implementations, Performance limits due to wlroots dependency, Unclear if it runs as well on old/underpowered hardware as IceWM

Feature requests: Plain text file configuration like IceWM, Built-in functional taskbar
