Description

We have been using graph DBs more and more at work. I found them painful to work with locally and decided to try and build something better.

Could you build this?

No Designing an embedded, file-based ACID-compliant graph database engine from scratch requires deep database internals, disk storage layout, and query engine expertise.

What it would actually take: A SQLite-equivalent graph DB requires implementing a custom storage engine (e.g., B+ Trees or LSM trees mapped to disk files, or layered over LMDB), write-ahead logging (WAL) for ACID transactions, and a graph query engine (handling Cypher or openCypher). Graph-specific query optimization (like worst-case optimal joins and index-free adjacency) requires substantial knowledge of computer science graph theory and database systems engineering.

Discussion

20 comments analyzed.

Competitors mentioned: ArcadeDB, SurrealDB, Neo4j, KuzuDB/LadybugDB, SparrowDB

Concerns raised: Multi-process/concurrent access handling, Single developer project vs enterprise-backed alternatives, Performance benchmarks differ from published results

Feature requests: Authorization/RBAC system for ReBAC and ABAC models, Support for RDF/SPARQL/ontology use cases
