Description
I'm Sam, I make sample libraries (as FrozenPlain). These sample libraries run inside Floe, my audio plugin for Linux, macOS and Windows. It's designed for musicians, composers and producers - typically people involved with film/TV/game scoring or ambient music. I open-sourced it primarily because I'm very fond of this philosophy and I want to open the door for serving a wider audience than just my own libraries. It's totally free, no sign-ups. You'll need a DAW. To try it: - Download and install Floe: https://floe.audio - Download your choice of free packages: https:floe.audio/packages#community-packages or https://www.frozenplain.com/product/music-box-suite-free - Install the packages using Floe's 'Install Package' button. https://floe.audio/docs/installation/install-packagesI'm curious about HN's thoughts regarding the open-source nature, directions I could take for expanding the audience, and the Lua based sample-library it has (https://floe.audio/docs/develop/develop-libraries). Thanks.

Could you build this?
No Building a cross-platform C++/Rust audio plugin (CLAP/VST3/AU) with real-time DSP, sample synthesis, granular synthesis, and low-latency audio engine execution requires specialized digital signal processing and systems programming knowledge.
What it would actually take: A production audio plugin requires a framework like JUCE or NIH-plug in C++ or Rust, with a hard real-time, lock-free audio rendering thread capable of streaming multi-gigabyte sample formats from disk. The core challenges are implementing high-performance DSP algorithms (granular synthesis, pitch shifting, anti-aliased filters) without audio dropouts, and ensuring compliance with host DAW threading models across macOS, Windows, and Linux. This demands senior digital signal processing (DSP) and real-time audio systems engineering expertise.
Discussion
16 comments analyzed.
Competitors mentioned: LinkLever, Decent Sampler, Kontakt, Reaper, Surge XT
Concerns raised: File permission issues writing adjacent to plugin file, Non-portable plugin state stored in OS hardcoded directories, Multi-room studio synchronization and drift between instances, GUI customization complexity with existing ingrained interface
Feature requests: API for creating custom GUIs for sample libraries, Runtime path inference with optional local data directory fallback, Pure Zig implementation without C++ dependencies, Per-user vs all-users installation options
