Description
Today, Iām proud to announce Homebrew 6.0.0. The most significant changes since 5.1.0 are a new tap trust security mechanism, the new faster, smaller, default internal Homebrew JSON API, sandboxing on Linux, better defaults informed by our user survey, many brew bundle improvements, improved performance and initial support for macOS 27 (Golden Gate).Happy to discuss any questions here!

Could you build this?
No Homebrew is a massive package management ecosystem with complex OS integration, thousands of build formulae, bottle build pipelines, and deep security sandboxing on Linux and macOS.
What it would actually take: A real package manager at this scale requires a Ruby/C/Go engine managing dependency resolution, dynamic sandbox profiles (Bubblewrap on Linux, macOS sandbox-exec/seatbelt), binary distribution networks (bottles on CDNs), and a sprawling distributed infrastructure for building and vetting thousands of community packages.
Discussion
20 comments analyzed.
Competitors mentioned: flox, mise, and devenv (for reproducible dev environments), Google Search (as alternative to malware-serving ads), Claude (as search alternative with better safeguards)
Concerns raised: Internal JSON API may break custom scripts relying on old format, Users will blindly trust everything in tap trust like they do with other package managers, Security patches not always documented/backported in unmaintained packages like Busybox, Docker compose plugin installation not recognized by docker CLI, Apple hardware support policy differs from Homebrew's support model
Feature requests: Linux sandbox support (parity with macOS), Better documentation for rename_exe option on aqua backend, Default docker-compose definition should support rename_exe
