Description

Oak is a version control system I've been working on designed for agents (https://oak.space). It improves the speed and context your agents need when working on serious projects. With virtual mounts, agents locally and in the cloud no longer need a full copy of a repo to get working. You can work on many tasks in parallel without needing to download everything or fight worktrees. Version control shouldn't waste you or your agents time. It should be fast, creative and fun to make things with agents.Oak is still early in development. There's no Windows build and missing plenty of features (no CI, no issues, no comments). We still use GitHub Actions for building Oak now, but we've been fully bootstrapped on Oak with no Git backup for several months: https://oak.space/oak/oak.Blog post: https://oak.space/blog#git-is-foreverDocs: https://oak.space/docs

Could you build this?

No Oak is an alternative version control system featuring custom virtual file system mounts to avoid full repo clones, demanding deep systems programming and filesystem kernel/FUSE expertise.

What it would actually take: Building a custom VCS with virtual mounts requires systems programming (typically Rust or C++) implementing a content-addressable storage engine and a custom user-space file system (FUSE or OS-specific virtual file drivers like VFS / ProjFS). The hard parts are handling distributed conflict-free resolution, chunking protocols, local cache coherency, and operating-system-level driver stability under heavy parallel I/O.

Discussion

20 comments analyzed.

Competitors mentioned: jj (Jujutsu) workspaces, Google hosting solutions with VCS, git-lazy-mount

Concerns raised: Breaks permission model in Claude Code, FUSE mounts more wasteful than typical repo cloning, LLMs generating unsafe long composed shell commands hard to audit, Over-engineering repo understanding layers that confuse users, Unclear how same-team hosting/VCS integration improves things

Feature requests: Better TUI/CLI for human users, Emphasis on parallelism aspect with mounts, Offload approval work to agents in coming years
