Description
Colin here, creator of Nub. I’ve had the general shape of this in mind for years. Nub runs your code with stock `node`, augmented with a `--require` preload hook[0] that adds a transpiler (oxc-powered, packaged as a Node-API add-on), registers a module resolution hook[1], and injects polyfills as needed for APIs like `Worker`, `Temporal`, etc. All purely additive, your code ultimately runs using Node’s actual engine & stdlib implementations.[0] https://nodejs.org/api/cli.html#-require-module[1] https://nodejs.org/api/module.html#moduleregisterhooksoption...

Could you build this?
No Writing a Node.js preload runtime toolkit that integrates an oxc-powered Rust transcompiler via Node-API, custom module resolution hooks, and polyfills requires deep Node.js internals and native C++/Rust addon development expertise.
What it would actually take: Requires low-level Node-API (N-API) integration in Rust using `oxc` or `swc` for on-the-fly AST transformation, implementing ECMAScript loader hooks (`import-in-the-middle` or Module._resolveFilename monkey-patching), and writing native bindings across operating systems. Requires seasoned Node.js core and systems programming expertise.
Discussion
20 comments analyzed.
Competitors mentioned: Deno, Bun, pnpm, Yarn, npm
Concerns raised: Segfaults in runtime, Node.js removed --experimental-transform-types, blocking native TypeScript support, WebSocket server support missing despite Node 22 claim, oxc transpiler compatibility dependency unclear, Unclear value proposition compared to alternatives
Feature requests: Native WebSocket server implementation, Just wrap pnpm instead of reimplementing package management

Same idea, different domain
Nobody's really built a dev tools tool for Sales yet.
