What it would actually take: A real version needs a per-city data strategy: official GTFS and GTFS-realtime feeds, or licensed agreements with transit agencies. The app would be a web or mobile front end over a backend that polls and normalizes those feeds, with caching and map tiles. The hard part is data access and coverage, not the code.
