Description

This started out when I vibe-coded a guitar scale fingering generator. It came out pretty good, and I started adding stuff to it: chords, then how chords and scales interact. Then I added charts for other instruments I mess around with: piano, cello, alto recorder. There's a complexity toggle to go from basic harmony to extended/experimental stuff. It's honestly still mostly a toy, but I thought other people might be interested in playing with it. Source is on github, so it's easy enough to run locally and fork.https://github.com/aleshh/gtr-scales

Could you build this?

Yes The author explicitly vibe-coded this music theory visualization tool, which relies on standard deterministic music theory formulas and interactive UI charts.

Discussion

20 comments analyzed.

Competitors mentioned: Tab PDFs for scale reference, AlphaTab for music notation, Flipper.fm (creator's other project)

Concerns raised: Too cluttered UI for quick reference, Overpromising in title - not beginner-friendly, Arbitrary music theory jargon deters beginners, LLM-generated design looks generic/generic vibe coding aesthetic, Sound quality is very basic

Feature requests: Interactive fretboard box overlay to mark 4-5 fret positions, Play button near top or spacebar hotkey for quick sound playback, Support for Banjo and other instruments, Better quality instrument sounds, Simpler UI with less information density
