Read the full description

Trellis is a native macOS terminal that's more than a terminal: windows, tabs and splits in a sidebar, saved SSH hosts, one-click project tasks, a command palette and scratchpad, plus a CLI and MCP server so scripts and AI agents can drive it. Free, MIT.

Could you build this?

Partial Tabs, splits, SSH host management, a command palette and an MCP server are all buildable with AI help, but a native macOS terminal needs a correct terminal emulator, and Swift/AppKit work is harder to vibe-code reliably than web code.

What it would actually take: A realistic build would use Swift and AppKit or SwiftUI, with an existing terminal emulation library such as SwiftTerm or libghostty rather than writing VT parsing from scratch. The hard parts are PTY handling, correct terminal emulation and rendering performance, and macOS-native polish. Expertise in macOS app development and terminal internals is needed, and the MCP/CLI layer is the easier part.
