This extension (unlike others) allows not only viewing but editing PDF files in VSCode IDE. It also allows annotating in LaTeX maths and supports Copilot integration for explanations/summaries. Super useful for analyzing research papers or working with documents in general.

What it would actually take: Build a VSCode extension with a webview using pdf.js for rendering and a PDF library such as pdf-lib or MuPDF for manipulation. Annotations can be stored as PDF annotation objects, and LaTeX math can be rendered with KaTeX or MathJax. Faithful editing of existing text and objects requires deep knowledge of the PDF file format, font embedding, and content-stream rewriting, which is specialized document-engineering work.
