Description

Hi HN! Few months ago I've shared a new kind of markdown editor that we (a team of three from the Czech Republic) have been working on (HN post: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46144801). What resonated with folks the most was Kraa's unique ‘real-real-time’ chat feature. We have now acted on this feedback, improved the chat features, and made what we call Kraa Trees.Trees allow anyone to create a light-weight community / chat channels. It would be a stretch to call it an alternative to Discord, yet, but we hope that the frictionless nature of Trees will make them useful for small groups that want something simpler, more immediate, and less cluttered. With the live-typing being one of the key differentiating features. You can create your own community/rooms by selecting "Tree of leaves" in the New leaf button dropdown. You don't need an account to try Kraa nor Kraa Trees. We would love to know what you think!

Could you build this?

Partial The UI and basic WebSocket connection are easy to generate, but sub-keystroke collaborative streaming with conflict resolution and state sync requires sophisticated distributed real-time mechanics.

What it would actually take: The stack needs high-throughput WebSocket servers (e.g., Elixir/Phoenix, Rust, or Go) coupled with CRDTs (such as Yjs or Automerge) to handle live character-by-character updates and cursor positions. The difficult challenge is handling network jitter, packet reordering, and maintaining low-latency state consistency across concurrent typists without desyncing the markdown document tree.

Discussion

10 comments analyzed.

Competitors mentioned: chat.lasagna.pizza, Google Wave, Reddit, Discord, FriendFeed

Concerns raised: Crowded market with many existing chat apps, Real-time keystroke visibility causes stress and embarrassment, Adoption barrier: blank canvas with no existing content or workflow, Will attract trolls without moderation system, Limited to specific use cases, not general-purpose

Feature requests: Compose full message before sending (traditional mode), Visual status indicators (background color changes) for live/edited content, Time buffer or delay before auto-submit, Mouseover-to-edit without clicks, auto-submit on pause, Attach URLs as extra field to comments
