Description

Wouldn't be nice to press <C-x C-f> (find-file) and instead of a file path, give it a GitHub URL, and then just browse the repo in Dired?

Could you build this?

Yes This is an Emacs Lisp package that fetches repo directory trees and file contents via the GitHub REST/GraphQL API and renders them inside an Emacs Dired or virtual buffer.

Discussion

14 comments analyzed.

Competitors mentioned: github-explorer (TxGVNN), Forgejo/Codeberg, git clone

Concerns raised: Only works with public repos, not private repositories, GitHub API rate limits (30 requests/minute), Search API only indexes main branches and files under 400KB, GitHub search API doesn't support regex, GitHub infrastructure sluggishness under load

Feature requests: Search command using GitHub search API, FUSE mount for ripgrep/LSP access, Easy clone/jump to cloned repo workflow, File editing capabilities (renaming, mutations), Support for private repositories
