Nonja

A quiet inbox for Mac notifications, no banners

Get picks like this daily. Today's launch numbers, the top launches, AI and tech news, and a daily opportunity pick, straight to your inbox.

Read the full description

Turn notification banners off and they still arrive in Notification Center. Nonja reads them from there and keeps them in a menu bar inbox, grouped by app, so nothing pops up over your work. Open the menu when you decide to: each app's heading clears its notifications in one click, and clicking a row opens the exact screen the notification points at, just like the real one. The icon only says whether something is waiting, with no count climbing at the edge of your vision. Free and open source.

Could you build this?

Partial The inbox UI is easy, but reading other apps' notifications depends on undocumented macOS notification storage that changes between OS versions and is access-restricted.

What it would actually take: The UI is a menu bar app built with AppKit or SwiftUI and grouping logic. The hard piece is reliably intercepting notifications from Notification Center, which means reverse-engineering the private notification database or other unofficial hooks and keeping them working across macOS releases and permission changes. This needs deep macOS internals and sandboxing knowledge.
