Description

Hey HN, I made a site where you can draw on street-level panoramas. Your drawings persist and other people can see them in real time.Strokes get projected onto the 3D panorama so they wrap around buildings and follow the geometry, not just a flat overlay. Uses WebGL2 for rendering, Mapillary for the street imagery. The idea is for it to become a global canvas, anyone can leave a mark anywhere and others stumble onto it.Link is https://washere.live

Could you build this?

Partial A basic canvas overlay is simple, but projecting 2D drawing strokes accurately onto 3D scene geometry from street-level panoramas in real-time requires non-trivial 3D graphics and photogrammetry math.

What it would actually take: The stack involves Mapillary's API for street panoramas paired with Three.js or custom WebGL2 shaders that utilize camera intrinsic/extrinsic parameters and reconstructed depth point clouds or mesh proxy geometry. Drawing requires raycasting user screen strokes against the reconstructed 3D world geometry to calculate surface coordinates, storing these vector paths in a geospatial backend, and broadcasting real-time stroke updates via WebSockets. This requires specialized proficiency in 3D projective geometry, depth maps, and WebGL ray-to-surface mapping.
