Could you build this?
Partial A web map showing vessel positions is vibe-codeable, but continuously aggregating live global AIS radio/satellite data feeds and running real-time spatial geospatial proximity queries against undersea cable vector layers requires dedicated data pipelines.
What it would actually take: The stack involves PostGIS or H3 spatial indexing, a high-throughput stream consumer (e.g., Kafka or Go-based workers) handling raw NMEA/AIS messages from satellite/terrestrial providers (like Spire or AISHub), and an alerting engine calculating spatial intersections against proprietary submarine cable GIS data. Specialized expertise in GIS algorithms, high-volume telemetry ingestion, and maritime domain data is required.
Discussion
18 comments analyzed.
Competitors mentioned: AISStream (API dependency), Satellite imagery for ship detection, Home Assistant (dashboard integration)
Concerns raised: AIS can be disabled or spoofed by vessels conducting illicit activities, Misleading 'no cloud' claim when API dependency required, Onboarding complexity for non-technical users with Python/dependencies, Initial setup issues with WebSocket connection failures
Feature requests: Integration with Home Assistant dashboard, Satellite imagery overlay to cross-reference with AIS data, Voice assistant support (Siri/NORA commands for vessel info), Screenshot/visualization capability
