Description

Hi,I've made an early version of a physical design advisor (called Vizier) for DuckDB. It can analyze a collection of queries (using a set of heuristics) and recommend changes to the physical design/layout of the database (for example, sort orders, Parquet layouts, indexes, etc.), in order to make those queries run faster.Vizier is implemented as a DuckDB extension in Zig and supports DuckDB version 1.2.0 and newer. The project is very early-stage, but if you're interested in learning more about Vizier or trying it out, you can check out the links below:Project's GitHub repo: https://github.com/CogitatorTech/vizierVizier documentation: https://cogitatortech.github.io/vizier/

Could you build this?

Partial Parsing SQL queries with DuckDB's AST parser to inspect filters and joins is approachable, but designing an accurate cost-model-driven physical layout advisor (optimal sorting, partitioning, and indexing) requires non-trivial database internals knowledge.

What it would actually take: The system must integrate with DuckDB's query parser and planner (via Python or C++ bindings) to extract predicate pushdowns, sort orders, and join keys across a query workload. The difficult part is building a multi-objective cost estimator that balances write amplification/storage footprint against query speedup when proposing Parquet row-group sorting, Z-order curves, or min/max statistics. It requires a database engineer familiar with vectorized query execution and columnar storage layouts.
