Description

I’ve been working on Sylve, a management plane focused on making FreeBSD infrastructure easier to manage. It integrates closely with FreeBSD (Bhyve, ZFS, networking) and provides a UI + API for managing VMs, jails, and clusters across nodes. It features:* VM (Bhyve) and jail management* ZFS-based storage management (with Zelta for backups)* Multi-node clustering (based on Raft)* Runs in ~256MB RAM (even with clustering enabled)* Built-in web terminal (Ghostty/WASM)* Integrated networking (bridges, DHCP via dnsmasq)* Samba share managementThe backend is written in Go, and the frontend uses SvelteKit + TypeScript. Development of this project was supported by the FreeBSD Foundation.Quick install:fetch -o - https://sh.sylve.io | sh

Could you build this?

No Sylve requires deep kernel-level FreeBSD knowledge to orchestrate Bhyve virtualization, Jails, VNET networking, ZFS pools, and multi-node clustering safely in production.

What it would actually take: The architecture comprises a privileged daemon written in Go/Rust communicating with FreeBSD kernel interfaces via `libbe`, `libnv`, ioctls, and CLI utilities (bhyve, jail, zfs, pfctl), backed by a modern web UI. The hard parts include handling virtual switch networking, jail isolation edge cases, live ZFS replication consistency across clustered nodes, and robust recovery from VM hypervisor panics. This requires seasoned FreeBSD systems engineering, systems-level debugging, and storage infrastructure expertise.
