Description

After reading "During Helene, I Just Wanted a Plain Text Website" on Sparkbox (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46494734) , I built safe-now.live – a text-first emergency info site for USA and Canada. No JavaScript, no images, under 10KB. Pulls live FEMA disasters, NWS alerts, weather, and local resources. This is my first live website ever so looking for critical feedback on the website. Please feel free to look around.https://safe-now.live

Discussion

20 comments analyzed.

Competitors mentioned: National Weather Service, Canada weather alerts (Environment and Climate Change Canada)

Concerns raised: Scraper not fully ready yet (beta quality), 5-minute cache may not provide real-time information during emergencies, Text-heavy interface makes information hard to quickly locate, Data sources have inconsistent/questionable categorization (scams & fraud labels)

Feature requests: Add small SVG icons to represent hazard types visually, Implement memcached or Cloudflare caching for better performance, Add bookmark recommendation/prompt for users, Lazy-load visual elements to avoid delaying content

Competitors

Other products that read as similar to this one — 34 launches clear the similarity bar, closest 8 shown.

Attention rank: #5 of 35 (itself plus its competitors, highest first — normalized so YC and Product Hunt are compared fairly).

Launched 95 days after the earliest competitor.
