Description

I think agents should work like real teams, with independent, distinct roles, async communication, and the ability to onboard new teammates or tools without restructuring the whole org. I built backend systems at Yahoo and TikTok so event-driven agents felt obvious. But no agent SDKs were using this pattern, so I made Calfkit.Calfkit breaks down agents into independent services (LLM inference, tools, and routing) that communicate asynchronously through Kafka. Agents, tool services, and downstream consumers can be deployed, added-to, removed, and scaled independently.Check it out if this interests you! I’m curious to see what y’all think.

Could you build this?

Partial The basic concept of publishing LLM agent messages to Kafka topics is simple, but building a robust distributed event-driven agent orchestration SDK requires nontrivial distributed systems engineering.

What it would actually take: A production implementation requires a high-throughput messaging layer (Kafka/Redpanda), stateful stream processing, and SDK clients in TypeScript or Python managing agent state machines and checkpointing. The primary challenge lies in distributed state management, handling dead-letter queues, idempotent agent executions, out-of-order event resolution, and actor-model concurrency across asynchronous agent boundaries.

Discussion

4 comments analyzed.

Concerns raised: Many AI startups are just agents on existing workflows, easy to build, Risk of slow, fragile, unscalable SaaS from fast shipping without solid infrastructure, Lack of real-world agent implementations beyond basic dev workflows, Kafka as a dependency creates friction for casual/toy users

Feature requests: Compatibility with lighter-weight alternatives to Kafka

Nobody's really built a agent / copilot tool for Agriculture yet.
