Description

I built a browser-native Unix environment - shell, filesystem, git, npm, node, vi, 200+ commands. Everything is JavaScript running client-side with IndexedDB for persistence. The whole thing builds to a single static HTML file (~420 KB gzipped).Try it: https://shiro.computerFor interactive demos showing npm install, node execution, and git workflows -- running live in Shiro, not recordings -- see https://shiro.computer/showSource: https://github.com/williamsharkey/shiroP.S. `curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash` works. You can run real Claude Code and it can use Shiro's tools like a normal Linux system.

Could you build this?

No Packing a complete POSIX shell, virtual filesystem, and JavaScript/WASM ports of node, git, and over 200 Unix utilities into a sub-500KB bundle requires extreme systems-level optimization.

What it would actually take: Requires implementing an in-memory or IndexedDB-backed POSIX virtual filesystem layer and an extensive shell interpreter entirely in JavaScript. Essential utilities like git and node must be compiled to WebAssembly via Emscripten/WASI and heavily tree-shaken and compressed to fit within a single 420 KB static HTML file. This demands deep expertise in browser sandboxing, compilation toolchains, and operating systems emulation.

Discussion

6 comments analyzed.

Competitors mentioned: Real Claude Code with Linux system tools, Local Unix environments with ELF binary support

Concerns raised: gcc is a stub that only fuzzy-matches hello world, doesn't actually compile, Not a true Unix environment - no ELF binary support, no kernel, Commands are TypeScript reimplementations, not genuine Unix tools, Installation script produces errors and crashes to command line, Misleading marketing claim about Unix environment

Nobody's really built a dev tools tool for Sales yet.
