Description

Hi HN! I created a small stack-based programming language, which I'm using to solve Advent of Code problems. I think the forward Polish notation works pretty nicely.

Could you build this?

No Designing and implementing a programming language from scratch requires specialized knowledge of compilers, interpreters, lexing, parsing, and bytecode execution.

What it would actually take: Building an interpreter or compiler for a stack-based concatenative language requires an abstract syntax tree (AST) parser or tokenizer, a virtual machine with call/data stacks, an evaluation loop, and memory management. The challenge lies in formal language semantics, operator precedence, type safety or dynamic dispatch, and error diagnostics, which demand rigorous compiler design fundamentals.

Discussion

4 comments analyzed.

Competitors mentioned: Forth, PostScript, dc

Concerns raised: List syntax creates reversed order (confusing), Reading tokens right-to-left then top-to-bottom is weird, Unclear advantage over RPN for experienced stack language users

Attention rank: #48 of 93 (itself plus its competitors, highest first — normalized so YC and Product Hunt are compared fairly).
