Description

Hi HN,I built this extension because the context switching was killing my productivity. Every time I switched to the browser to share a coding update (#BuildInPublic), I ended up doomscrolling for 20 minutes and losing my flow.Since existing extensions broke with the X API v2 changes, I decided to build my own solution focusing on privacy and the Free Tier limits. How it works:BYOK (Bring Your Own Keys): It uses your own API credentials.Security: Keys are stored locally using vscode.SecretStorage (never in settings.json).Limits: It implements a local counter to respect the strict 17 tweets/24h limit of the Free API tier.Write-only: It intentionally doesn't read your timeline to keep you focused. It's open source and my first extension. Feedback on the code structure is welcome!Marketplace: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=Jawuilp.... Repo: https://github.com/Jawuilp/X-writer

Could you build this?

Yes It is a straightforward VS Code extension that captures user text and dispatches it to the standard X API v2 endpoints, which AI coding assistants can generate rapidly.

Competitors mentioned: GitSocial (repository-based posting alternative), TikTok (replaced Twitter for some users), Bluesky

Concerns raised: Context switching still occurs when switching from work to social posting, Twitter relevance declining compared to past years, Bot spam on old posts

Feature requests: Add screenshots to GitHub repo / Marketplace page, Make available in Cursor editor, CLI utility version

Attention rank: #10 of 22 (itself plus its competitors, highest first — normalized so YC and Product Hunt are compared fairly).

Looks like the first mover among its competitors.
