Description
i've been a big fan of fedora's atomic distros and i decided to make my own but arch based to get the best of both worlds, which is kind of funny now because it looks exactly like silverblue. is it worth it? not sure, but it's been a interesting experience – and it's usable as a daily driver if your specs match.worth noting that because of the constraints of the setup you can develop something similar on your main machine without any realistic possibility of data loss since you never really touch the bootloader or the filesystem (partitioning and so on).

Could you build this?
No Creating an immutable, ostree-based Linux distribution requires deep OS-level systems engineering, package manager internals, and Linux boot architecture knowledge.
What it would actually take: This requires building custom ostree compose pipelines adapted to Pacman/Arch repositories, configuring Dracut/initramfs to support ostree deployment trees, and managing atomic updates via libostree. The builder needs expert-level familiarity with the Linux boot sequence (systemd-boot/GRUB), kernel parameter injection, and filesystem layout (/sysroot, /var bind mounts).
Discussion
7 comments analyzed.
Competitors mentioned: SteamOS, Fedora Silverblue, Zena project, silverpurple
Concerns raised: Immutability contradicts Arch philosophy of mutability and vanilla packages, Requires dedicated server infrastructure for OTA updates, OSTree tooling undocumented and fragmented across rpm-ostree, ostree, bootc, 2GB image pulls required instead of incremental updates without server, Single maintainer trust concern for regular OSTree builds
Feature requests: Incremental update support without full 2GB image downloads, Better ostree command line documentation
