Description

Hi HN, creator of Wealthfolio here.A year ago, I posted the first version. Since then, the app has matured significantly with two major updates:1. Multi-platform Support: Now available on Mobile (iOS), Desktop (macOS, Windows, Linux), and as a Self-hosted Docker image. (Android coming soon).2. Addons System: We added explicit support for extensions so you can hack around, vibe code your own integrations, and customize the app to fit your needs. The core philosophy remains the same: Always private, transparent, and open source.

Could you build this?

Partial The core portfolio tracking UI and Docker deployment are straightforward, but multi-platform synchronization, offline-first SQLite synchronization, and accurate automated tracking across worldwide equities/dividends/crypto require substantial data plumbing.

What it would actually take: A production-ready private tracker uses a cross-platform framework (such as Tauri, React Native, or Flutter) combined with local SQLite storage and secure multi-device synchronization (e.g., CRDTs or encrypted sync). The challenging part is integrating reliable, real-time and historical financial market data APIs, dividend calculation engines, multi-currency conversions, and corporate action adjustments across global exchanges without relying on centralized SaaS servers.

Discussion

20 comments analyzed.

Competitors mentioned: Plaid (bank data aggregation), Monarch (Mint replacement), YNAB (budgeting), Tiller (spreadsheet integration), Portfolio Performance (portfolio tracking)

Concerns raised: Plaid shares data with third parties despite privacy claims, Stock price history not calculated correctly (uses current price retroactively), Net worth report calculation issues, Dividend data quality insufficient for TTWROR/IRR calculations, Data vulnerability in bankruptcy scenarios

Feature requests: Granular privacy controls and audit logs for data access, Historic stock price calculations for accurate net worth tracking, Tabular data visualization component (graphic walker integration), Costco order import and search functionality, Quick-entry button like YNAB 4 app
