Description
Too often I find myself being lazy with commit messages. But I don't want AI to write them for me... only i truly know why i wrote the code i did.So why don't i get AI to help me get that into words from my head? That's what i built: smartcommit asks you questions about your changes, then helps you articulate what you already know into a proper commit message. Captures the what, how, and why.Built this after repeatedly being confused 6 months in a project as to why i made the change i had made...Would love feedback!

Yes It is an interactive CLI tool that runs `git diff`, queries an LLM API with clarifying prompts, and generates a commit message.
Discussion
20 comments analyzed.
Competitors mentioned: Claude Code /commit command, AI commit message generation tools, Google's commit message guide
Concerns raised: 50-character limit is too restrictive for meaningful messages, AI-generated commit messages repeat Git metadata instead of capturing intent, Difficult to teach concise writing consistently across teams, Generic AI prompts produce worthless generic summaries, Most people don't want excessive code comments as alternative documentation
Feature requests: Support higher character limits (80-100 characters) for commit titles, Extract 'why' information from human developers, not just generate summaries, Pre-commit hook to prefix commits with branch names, Better tools for code annotations beyond commit messages
