The 5 Things Real Launches Get Asked For Most, By the Numbers

October 10, 2026 · Nicheloom

Every launch treats the idea as the biggest risk. The data says the risk that actually shows up afterward is smaller and more boring than that: once a product is live and real people try it, what comes back in the comments is overwhelmingly plumbing, not pitches.

We ran Nicheloom's own LLM-extracted feature-request data -- what real people ask for in a launch's Hacker News discussion thread -- across every Show HN launch with a real comment thread, as of October 10, 2026.

Methodology, stated plainly

Only Hacker News's Show HN threads get this treatment right now -- it's the only tracked source with a public comment feed wired into the pipeline (Y Combinator's launches page and Product Hunt's submissions don't have one). Zero-comment launches are skipped entirely, no fetch, no extraction. That leaves 3,851 launches with real extracted feature-request data -- a meaningful slice, not a universal one. Each launch's comment thread is read by an LLM once, extracting up to 5 concrete feature requests per launch (generic praise doesn't count). We grouped the raw extracted phrases into 5 buckets by keyword match and counted, per launch, whether it was asked for at all -- not every individual mention, so one launch with three differently-worded API requests still only counts once.

What gets asked for, by the numbers

What's asked for Launches asking Share
An API or integration (webhooks, Zapier, etc.) 612 16%
Platform coverage (Windows, Linux, mobile) 340 9%
Self-hosting or open-sourcing it 138 4%
Export / data portability 123 3%
Dark mode 20 1%

The headline: "plug me into what I already use" (612 launches, 16%) beats every platform-coverage request combined. More people want a product to talk to their existing stack than want it on a different OS.

481 launches (12%) got asked for at least one of platform coverage, self-hosting, or dark mode -- real, but still a smaller slice than the integration gap once you count launch-by-launch instead of adding up every differently-worded mention.

What this actually means if you're about to launch

None of these are creative gaps -- they're table stakes a real audience notices within hours of trying a product. An API or webhook isn't a growth idea, it's what turns "neat tool" into "thing I can wire into my workflow." Self-hosting and open-sourcing show up enough (4%) that if a product touches sensitive data, expect it, especially from a technically literate crowd.

This doesn't say build all five before shipping -- most working products launch with real gaps on purpose. It does say: seeing "does this have an API" in your own launch thread isn't a verdict on your idea. It's the single most common piece of feedback real launches get, full stop.

What this doesn't tell you

This is Show HN only -- Product Hunt and Y Combinator launches may get asked for completely different things in comment sections we don't have access to yet. It's also keyword-bucketing on top of an LLM's own extraction, so an unusually-phrased request can land in "other" instead of one of these five buckets. And this measures what people said, not what the team actually shipped afterward -- we don't track whether any of these asks got built.

Frequently asked questions

What's the single most common thing real launches get asked for? An API or integration -- 612 of 3,851 Show HN launches with real comment-thread data (16%) got asked for one, more than platform coverage, self-hosting, export, and dark mode combined.

Where does this data come from? Hacker News Show HN comment threads only, read by an LLM once per launch, extracting up to 5 concrete feature requests (not generic praise). 3,851 launches have this signal as of October 10, 2026.

Does this mean I should build an API before I launch? Not necessarily -- most launches ship with real gaps on purpose. It means an API or integration request after launch is the single most common piece of feedback real products get, not a sign your specific idea is missing something.

Can I see this data for a specific niche? Yes -- each niche's own page on Nicheloom now shows the real feature requests, concerns, and named competitors pulled from that niche's own launches, when real comment-thread data exists for it.
