35 Real Market Gaps Hiding in Plain Sight (By the Numbers)

October 1, 2026 · Nicheloom

Most "market gap" content is a guess dressed up as insight: a blogger's hunch about what's missing, with no data behind the claim. This post is the opposite — every row below is a real cell from Nicheloom's own tracked launches, pulled live from the Gaps page on October 1, 2026.

The short answer: out of every vertical-×-function combination we track, 44 are currently flagged as gaps -- nearly empty, but sitting inside an otherwise busy row or column. 40 of those 44 already have a launch that did well despite the thin competition -- that's a real signal, not a hunch.

What we mean by "gap" (and what we don't)

A gap isn't just "nobody's building this." That's usually a sign nobody wants it. A gap, in Nicheloom's own methodology, is a cell in the vertical × function matrix (think: Real Estate × Workflow Automation, or Fintech × Agent/Copilot) that's nearly empty relative to how busy its row or column is everywhere else -- a quiet cell inside a loud neighborhood, not a quiet neighborhood.

Every gap cell gets one of three statuses:

Status Meaning
Signal A launch that showed up here did well anyway — real evidence of demand despite low supply.
Thin Nothing recent, but something has launched here before.
Untested Nobody has ever launched here. Not proof of demand — just that no one's tried.

As of today, our matrix has 44 gap cells: 40 signal, 1 thin, 3 untested. The signal ones are the interesting ones -- they're not empty because the market rejected them, they're empty because almost nobody has looked.

Methodology, stated plainly: these numbers come from launches tracked across Y Combinator, Product Hunt, Hacker News, and GitHub Trending, comparing the last 5.2 months (April 24 -- September 28, 2026) against the prior 5.2 months. "Recent" means a launch in that current window; "ever" means all-time. Attention score blends how rare the cell is against how much traction the few launches it has got. The dataset updates twice daily, so these exact numbers will have shifted by the time you read this -- that's the point; the live page is always more current than this post.

Three worth a closer look

Real estate × Workflow automation (0.74 attention, our highest-scoring gap). 24 launches, ever, in a function (workflow automation) that's crowded almost everywhere else. 16 of those 24 happened in just the last 5.2 months -- this isn't a dead category, it's a recently-heating one that most builders still haven't noticed.

Horizontal × Hardware & robotics (218 recent, 309 all-time). This one looks like a contradiction -- 218 recent launches is a lot of volume for a "gap." It's flagged because hardware/robotics launches are overwhelmingly concentrated in specific verticals (industrial, automotive) -- a horizontal (cross-industry) hardware play is still comparatively rare even at this absolute volume. A reminder that "gap" is always relative to the row/column, never an absolute launch count.

Agriculture × Agent/copilot (0.74 attention, only 6 launches ever). The smallest sample on this list, and worth treating that way -- six data points isn't proof of a trend. But every one of those six landed well enough to keep this cell's attention score tied for the highest we're tracking.

What a gap doesn't tell you

A signal gap means real traction happened somewhere rare. It doesn't mean the category is easy, defensible, or ready for you specifically to enter. Six launches in agriculture agent/copilot is six data points, not a trend line. Treat every row here as a shortlist to go investigate -- read the actual launches, check who's behind them, see what they charge -- never as a verdict.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a "gap" in Nicheloom? A vertical × function cell that's nearly empty relative to how busy its row or column is everywhere else -- not just a quiet category in isolation, but a quiet cell inside an otherwise active neighborhood.

What's the difference between "signal," "thin," and "untested"? Signal means a launch that showed up in that gap did well anyway -- real evidence despite low supply. Thin means nothing recent, but something launched there before. Untested means nobody ever has, which is not proof of demand, only that nobody's tried.

How often does this data update? Twice daily, pulled from Y Combinator, Product Hunt, Hacker News, and GitHub Trending. The numbers in this post are a snapshot from October 1, 2026 -- the live Gaps page will already be more current.

Does a gap guarantee a good business opportunity? No. It's a shortlist signal, not a verdict -- a low-supply category with early positive evidence, worth investigating further, not a validated business model.

Can I filter gaps by my own industry or product type? Yes -- the Gaps page and the Matrix both support filtering by source, vertical, function, and project type.
